Stay strong and keep fighting! (7.17.12)

(melissa) Thanks for all of the positive thoughts and prayers! We made it home and we are soaking up together time and the Montana summer. We head back to Denver for round 4 on Thursday. Mylah is healthy now and Rowan is feeling wonderfully and having the time of his life with a whole house to crawl around instead of a little hospital room. He is able to crawl on new laminate floors thanks to a crew of people who helped to get our home ready and safe for the fighter! He is eating well and not feeling anymore lingering nasuea from chemo, his little legs are getting some chubby on them. We are all gathering strength for one more round and praying that we will be done after one more round and never have a relapse. We are thinking often of our Denver support crew;...

end of round 3 (7.13.12)

(kristen) What a day! All week, we have been patiently (or rather impatiently) waiting for Rowan’s counts to recover from round 3 of chemo. It’s always so scary while he is in count recovery. Any little virus that would normally not be a big deal could be life threatening for baby Row. For a few days they hung out around 20, then 40, and in the last few days have jumped from 150 to 300s. Great news! That means Rowan gets to go home for a few days before starting round 4, his final round. Because his counts took a while to come up, we had all week to prepare. Melissa was bound and determined to make this discharge as smooth as possible. We spent all week going through the apartment, packing, cleaning, and organizing. Rowan was able to be...

Rollercoaster ride (6.27.12)

Round three is turning out to be a bit of a Rollercoaster ride. Rowan seems to be doing well for a few hours and then have some sort of a health scare in the next few hours. So far thankfully all of our scares have been only anxiety causing and not become anything serious. Rowan’s gtube site had one eval thought there was an abcess under the site and and infection but that is almost certainly not he case and he just had skin irritation. Rowan has a runny nose right now but it seems to be getting better. Any kind of virus right now would be very serious for Rowan. We are praying for his resperatory issues to resolve. It is our greatest concern right now. At one point there was a question as to whether or not he was having small seizures but everyone now...

Round three (6.22.12)

We are so thankful to be starting round three on schedule! I had a wonderful surprise during round two, I came to the hospital at 630am to find out that Rowan’s ANC (the number that basically tells us his immune system function) had jumped from in the 70s to 304! This was a huge jump up in a 24 hr period. After round one, rowans count recovery phase took two weeks longer than it should have and the doctors told us to expect that his count recovery would continue to get longer with each round. At that point we were unsure of how long rowans treatment course would last, by adding extra weeks at the end of each cycle a four month treatment plan turns into six or eight very quickly. So, the news that Rowan’s counts were recovering after round two was a...

Round 3 (6.20.12)

After a little over a week in Highwood, Rowan is back in Denver starting round 3 of chemo. Even though we know that Rowan needs this treatment, it’s never easy to start a round, knowing the potential side effects and how yucky it makes him feel. It’s so painful to watch Rowan, Melissa and Justin, and the whole family go through this crazy roller coaster. Yesterday Melissa and Rowan stopped by and he was laughing and crawling all over the place. In a few hours he could be lethargic and nauseous. So far, round 3 has started out slowly. Melissa had to be at the hospital at 8:00 this morning and is still waiting for a permanent room. They started treatment this afternoon . Before he started treatment, he had to fast, and then he will have 8 hours of...

Home to Highwood (6.15.12)

(kristen) Last week, Rowan finished round 2 of chemo. We’re half way there! Just like last time, his counts came up enough that he was released from the hospital. This time, however, we knew that it would be at least a week before he could start round 3, so the Flatens hopped a plane to Highwood. Everyone was super anxious to get home. I can’t imagine. Melissa hadn’t been home since she took Rowan in for a “routine” appointment two months ago. From all reports they are having a wonderful time! The girls have missed Highwood so much, and are fully taking in the wonderful outdoors from sun up to sun down. I have even heard stories of full face mud masks and wades through the creek sans clothing. Drink it up girls! I know it is so...
